Rumor: StarCraft: Ghost; Diablo 3 alive?

News | Feb. 25, 2008 (4 months, 1 week ago) | by Indelible | via www.diablo3.com | Filed in Blizzard Entertainment

Diablo3.com, a site dedicated to the pursuit of another Diablo game out of Blizzard, have posted an interesting news update on their main page focused around Blizzards list of cancelled games over the last two decades.

Blizzard suits Rob Pardo and Mike Morhaine took to the stage at GDC this year to tell everyone what they think is responcible for Blizzard Entertainments massive success in the gaming industry and also to talk a little about those titles we just didn't get to see.

Among the titles listed were the well known Warcraft Adventures and Pax Imperia but Diablo3.com didn't care about those titles. What they noted was that there was no mention of StarCraft: Ghost, a game that was supposedly shelved many years ago. More recently, execs at Blizzard have been throwing StarCraft: Ghost out as a title they'd like to re-explore at some point in the future and with people hoping for not one but two titles being announced this year, could this be the start of yet more hype surrounding the infamous development studio?

Games People Play
Crixa
Shattered Nations
Pax Imperia
Denizen
Warcraft Adventures
Nomad
Raiko

We knew about Pax Imperia and Warcraft Adventures, but that's all. Note the absence of StarCraft: Ghost on the list.

Also, no Diablo III here

As well as this possible hint at StarCraft: Ghost getting a second sitting, some other rumors have been flying around IRC channels and chat rooms regarding the long awaited, highly anticipated third sitting for the Diablo franchise.

For those of you who don't remember, StarCraft 2 was officially confirmed at last years World Wide Invitiational in Korea, a country famous for it's e-sport seen, especially with StarCraft. It's not surprising that they would chose a country where StarCraft matches are televised and StarCraft players are celebrities as the location for the announcement. Roll on one year and the location for the Blizzard World Wide Invitationals 2008 has been announced as Paris, Europe.

Some forums have begun juggling the possibility of the next installment of the Diablo franchise being announced with many hedging their bets on a Diablo MMO. If the persistent speculation of a Diablo MMO are true, I don't see it being announced at the Invitationals due to Blizzard wanting the MMO focus on World of Warcraft and its latest expansion, Wrath of the Lich King. If the speculation is false and the game is just a standard RPG with multiplayer through Battle.net then it is possible. Perhaps we will see blizzards first FPS, StarCraft: Ghost, removed from the shelf?

Everyone shall be waiting with baited breathe for the World Wide Invitationals in June not only for the showcase that it promises to be but also for the chance of a new game being announced. I personally am waiting to see if we will get another BlizzCon this year. I sincerely hope so...

Blizzard are currently working on the following four games, in order of release date:

WoW: Wrath of the Lich King
StarCraft II
Diablo 3
A new MMO - new IP

I'm guessing they might add a release a smaller title or two before they release their next MMO, as it could literally be uptowards a decade of - more WoW expansions, most likely. It'd make no sense to rush their next MMO while WoW is still growing as it is. Better to wait when most ppl are finally tired of it.

i think you will find the new mmo IS Diablo.

Blizzard would not know how to create something new/original if they had an instruction manual.

You really don't need loot to make a game great. You just need good competition. Planetside was awesome and if Blizzard ever created anything like it I'd never play another game. I would think Diablo 3 would be too close to following the fantasy genre of WoW. Give me a MMOFPS made by bliz.... give me World of Starcraft!!! Only possible thing better would be Sony selling Planetside to CCP and tying planetary combat into eve-online.... wishful thinking.....

i love posts like this they remind me of the National Enquirer, you take a small amount of fact and spin it in with large amounts of speculation and theory. Diablo 3 is in the works, enough conversation from blizzard has already pointed to this, and it will not be their next big MMO, as they have said 3000 times now that their next MMO will "not" be designed around current titles, if your having a hard time understanding what this means, it means "NEW".

Yeah while it's nice to see Starcraft: Ghost isn't on their list of canceled games, the reason Diablo III isn't on there is quite probably because of the fact that they haven't started development on it yet, so there's nothing to cancel.

Now, that's not to say they haven't thought about it at all -- I'm sure everyone at Blizzard would love to continue such a successful IP at some point.

There's a few other things too that were grammar related rather than spelling. Indelible needs a proofreader. ;)

And perhaps they didn't bother to mention Starcraft: Ghost because they've said many times by many different people in various places that they aren't currently working on bringing it back and don't plan on doing any console work any time soon. Unless people want to take their adamant denials as a lie.

After emailing blizzard, they never actually started making Diablo 3 which could be why it isnt on the cancelled list. But still, its hope for us, especially me because diablo 2 is one of my favourite games of all time. I prefer it to modern greats such as world of warcraft, that is how good it think it was.
These rumors may be true because recently the new World of Warcraft expansion has had a big backdate on release, which makes me think they are busy on another project aswell.

That was my thought... I was never aware that D3 was in the works in the first place. Keep in mind that Diablo was never developed by Blizzard itself, it was made by Condor Games, which was acquired partway through development of D1 by Blizzard and became Blizzard North. The same subset created Diablo 2. Those developers then left the company and eventually created Flagship Studios, which released the recent Hellgate: London, which truely is D3, just with a few.... issues... to work out.

If there were to be a D3, it would be made by completely different people. That's not to say it's a bad thing, as Bliz has a bad rep for losing developers, and the games are still phenomenal (something like 4 of the original people that worked on WoW are still on the team, from what I've heard).

Personally, I think D3 is not much of an option. World of Diablo would only work if it was something very similar to Hellgate: An action-RPG MMO, as it would be far too similar to WoW otherwise. I think that the MMO will almost definitely be either World of Starcraft, which would be very cool, or a new IP.

It is very interesting to see that Starcraft: Ghost disappeared from the failed games list though... Not sure how much I'm interested in that game, but it would be interesting to see nonetheless.

sadly world of starcraft wont work.... loot system would have to be taken out, and i dont think an mmo could be succesful without gear, still hope to see more starcraft games though.
(zerglings getting a claw from a boss, hydras getting a random "spit" :p )

This works under the assumption that they would use the same engine they use for World of Warcraft, which is most probably not the case. Further more, a twitch-action MMO, like Tabula Rasa or like SGW is going to be, made using the StarCraft IP would work very well indeed.

I really don't see Diablo III being anything more then what D2 was, online that is. I believe the only dissapointment i have for that game was that I had to be female to play sorcerer, but hell - back then I didn't know about diversity :P.

Starcraft: Ghost is on the top of my list of wants, and then Diablo III. And wasn't warcraft adventures suppose to be like WoW on ps3 and 306?

Honestly, though, how could they continue Diablo's story? Aren't all the brothers dead now. I saw just make a new IP. Or atleast announce that the new MMO is SC. Rob Pardo pretty much made it clear in one of his GDC speeches this year that they with WoW, W3 helped them establish the storyline for WoW. Not in those exact words mind you, but thats pretty much what he said, and they plan to do the same with SC it seems. I could be wrong here especially if they do announce a D3.

I don't see why they just don't make the fourth expansion with diablo as the plot. Wouldn't it be interesting that all this time WoW players have really been against the Three Prime Evils??

Who Knows, if you don't work at blizzard then just wait instead of guessing - there are plenty of good games to play in the mean time.
