StarCraft Online next?

News | Feb. 2, 2008 (5 months ago) | by Indelible | via uk.gamespot.com | Filed in Blizzard Entertainment

We've all been looking out for any hints as to what the next Blizzard MMO will be and it would be wrong of us not to help stir the pot. After all, Blizzard love to see some conjecture in the community.

We already know that Blizzard are working on a brand new MMO thanks to the Blizzard Jobs Page and a World of Warcraft Blue Poster who let it slip.

The question that now remains is what franchise the new title will draw upon and if rumours are to be taken seriously, it seems we may have our answer.

The guys over at Gamespot seem to have some information that suggests that the next MMO out of Blizzard Entertainment is, you guessed it, StarCraft Online. Or is it?

The latest kick to the hive comes from an online report out of Beijing found on financial news service Trading Markets. Citing Caijing Magazine, the report states that online game operators NetEase.com is on track to gaining a license to operate overseas-developed games, and that "industry insiders" say Blizzard's "Starcraft Online" may be the first of its offerings.

Here's Blizzard official response to the speculation and conjecture that we all know they love.

Our focus right now is on continuing development of Starcraft II and working our way toward beta. We haven't announced plans for anything called Starcraft Online, and we prefer not to address rumors or speculate on business operations that haven't been determined yet.

Sadly, Gamespot have apparently identified this latest case of fuel to the fire as nothing more than a bogus. This means that we still don't know what the next MMO out of Blizzard will be!

My money is currently on "Diablo Online". When Blizzard first posted job openings for this "Next Gen MMO", they referenced Diablo (usually a line stating something like "Blizzard Entertainment, creators of Diablo and Diablo II...") and postings for StarCraft II and WoW reference the respective games. Since then, they no longer reference any games in this manner.

I could be wrong, and it could be StarCraft Online, but at least it is some food for thought.

Key words "We haven't announced plans for" and " called Starcraft Online". Personally i see this as nothing more than carefully crafted PR speak designed to keep us in the dark, possibly guard the truth, and keep us making threads like this one. I also think that "World of Starcraft" would be a much cooler and possibly more likely name for the MMO. Plus, whose to say that Blizz hasn't decided to revive the legendary Diablo name? I would be first in line for "Diablo Online". But the most important point i must make is this: regardless of theme, Blizz have the gargantuan advantage of having fathered the most successfull MMORPG of all time, and having "THE" best talent in the industry (opinion), so even if it's "Hello Fucking Kitty and the curse of Pokemon" i'm going to buy it on day one.

I would hope that this next new MMO would be just that, NEW. I don't want to see a StarCraft Online or any online MMO dealing with an existing Blizz product. Something fresh and NEW would be great.

Nope, not working on anything called Starcraft Online. I like how he worded that. You will notice he did not say they were not working on a Starcraft MMO. They just are not working on a game called Starcraft Online, which is absolutely not what they would call the SC MMO, anyway.

He didn't even deny that. He denied that the had "announced plans" for a game called StarCraft Online.
